Personal Problems and Despair
We live in a time of rapid social change and personal despair for many. Mostly, economic problems account for many personal problems leading to despair across the United States. Few of us have control over these economic problems. Born into the working-class and middle-class, our knowledge, skill base, and parental expectations forged much of our self-expectations. In fact, our economic class position, our parent’s personal horizons, give shape to our own awareness of our social and economic position.
For some of us “born on the wrong side of the tracks,” limited self-expectations become part of an early learning experience. For those born into secure economic conditions, or apparently secure, growing up may include unlimited expectations. Now, today’s economic woes across the United States reshape what so many have expected as entitlements, opportunities to excel, and a level playing field. None of these expectations remain secure for millions of the young.
