Level Up Your Halloween Theme: How to Create a Mock Crime Scene

Young Girl in Red Dress Laying on Checkerboard Floor Surrounded by Assorted Evidence in a Staged Crime Scene

Come Halloween or any haunted theme party, the National Crime Scene Cleanup crews are the first ones asked for ideas among our friends. It’s true, we have many gruesome experiences to throw a killer time (no pun intended).

So, if you’re trying to take your staged crime scene or a haunted house themed party to the next level, you’re in the right place. Decorating your “haunted house” with bowls of eyeballs — grapes — and tombstones are old news. We take our décor seriously, we’re not throwing a run of the mill “He’s Dead to Me” divorce party here!

On the flip side, feel free to get creative and use these ideas for an unusual “He Stole My Heart” engagement party. Really, any house theme that fits with murder scene Halloween decorations works. If it fits your event, why not?

Make Your True Crime Party As Realistic As Possible

In order to make your scene look as realistic as possible, you’ll want to buy a couple of props. Some of these you can make/DIY yourself if you’re crafty, on a budget, and have the time.

You’ll want to think out of the box with caution tape, fun volunteers, and maybe even read how to make a murderer mystery for a fun dinner or cocktail event.

Yellow Tape

Yellow tape is an essential starting point for the decoration of your home. You can use it almost anywhere. Of course, you want to start with the front door. It’s a good idea to outline the door with this tape and put a few strips at the top of the door.

While you want your guests to duck under the tape, you don’t want to make it too hard to get past. The tape might get damaged if you put it too low, so you might want to test various heights before your event.

Use the murder scene tape to highlight specific areas and also to block off areas where you don’t want your guests to go. The best part about this tape is that it can be customized with Halloween messages like “keep out” or “you are next.”

Evidence of a Struggle

While you don’t want to break a vase that you got last year, you can easily create signs of a struggle. You can open dresser drawers and dangle clothing from the edge or place some items from a desk onto the floor surrounding it. Signs of a struggle can include furniture on its side or a lamp lying on the floor.

If you don’t want to take a chance with someone stepping on a valuable item, you can surround the evidence of a struggle with the yellow tape. You can also buy fake broken glass to make the area more realistic.

Murder Scene Chalk Outline

If there’s been a murder or someone’s heart was stolen, there needs to be a chalk outline. Body outline tape is almost universally recognized as part of a crime.

There are places online where you can buy chalk outline stickers, which might be necessary for carpeted areas in your home. But you can always save money if you have chalk at home by outlining a friend’s body on the driveway or porch. Don’t forget to draw the heart if it’s meant to be a unique engagement theme!

Police and Investigators Can Help The Murderer Mystery

Enlist the help of friends and family to dress as police officers and investigators. You can do this on a budget. Buy a costume police shirt, notebooks, large magnifying glasses, and other items.

When you enlist the right people, they can interact with the guests and ask questions about the murderer mystery. You might even set up an area where an officer is consoling the victim’s loved one or questioning them about their involvement. With the right help, this is a great way to take your party to the next level.

Evidence and Evidence Markers

You probably already know those bright yellow numbered markers used to identify where evidence was found from CSI shows. Using heavy-duty paper, you can easily make your own and place them around the chalk outline and scenes of a struggle.

The use of dirty footprints and food wrappers is a great way to create evidence. You can sprinkle evidence around your home to ensure that guests don’t clump into one area. Blood and bloody handprints are also a great source of evidence as is black dust where police look for fingerprints.

Other Cool Props to Use for an Investigation Party

You can also decorate the home with cool Halloween decorations from BloodyBathMat.com. They have dinner table and bathroom mats that change to red colored blood splatters when wet. And they’re reusable, so you can use them next year or for an April Fool’s fake murder prank as well!!

Fake crime scene reports are also a fun prop to have in the house to add to the storyline or display for “clues”.

With a little thought and creativity, you can turn your home into a crime scene for a Halloween theme event. From body outlines to CSI tape, you can find these essential items easily online, or you can create them yourself!
